Jaguar Wants Students to Design Their Future Models

Some of you autoevolution readers may have had the chance to follow great auto universities. Heck, maybe there’s even a couple of you people that have studied car design in college. However, most of us, are far from anything close to envisioning a vehicle that a luxury automaker would ever consider building on a production scale. But the 21st century is a rule changer, and Jaguar knows it.

That is why Jaguar recently decided to partner up with two premier US design colleges, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. Why? To design their future concept cars. Well, sort of.

The British sportscar maker claims student participants in the program will have the opportunity to work on Jaguar design briefs. They will create a 2030+ model year concept of a halo sportscar and a 2+2 four-door coupe interior.

The design briefs were created by the Jaguar Design team who will interact with students throughout the semester and ultimately judge the students’ work. It sounds to us that the Brits are quite severe. But how serious?

The design program will last a total of 12 weeks from start to finish while students transform concept sketches to scale models, both in digital and in clay form. During this time, the pupils and instructors will work closely with Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, and his team on all elements from inspiration, concept sketches to final design approvals, providing an experience as if an actual global manufacturing design studio,” the automaker explains in a press release.

This partnership might seem like a regular thing, but to us, petrolheads, it looks like a genuine summertime love tale all the way. In fact, it even ends that way. According to Jaguar, when the semester closes in August, students will present their final concepts to the Jaguar Design team who, with the aid of the school faculty, will select the most successful designs.

Sure, you could always think that Jaguar is looking for cheap labor, but we’ll consider that the voice of the haters and ignore it.
