Jaguar SUV Will Be Light and Agile

Jaguar has a lot on its plate right now, as it wants to introduce a total of 40 new cars, variant and technologies in the near future. Among the new products is a direct competitor for the BMW 3-Series, which should make a significant departure from the old X-Type. Add the production version of the C-X75 concept to that, and you begin to realize there’s a lot going on with the famous British firm.

If you we’re afraid that the rumored SUV/crossover will destroy the brand’s image, than you can rest assured, because company insiders have told Top Gear magazine it will be light, making use of an advanced aluminum body, and also fuel efficient.

Set to be launched in about four years’ time, the crossover will reportedly feature an aluminum body that weighs 200-300 kg (441-661 lbs) less than a conventional steel body. Furthermore, previous reports have stated the model will ride on an aluminum chassis, so it's easy to see how the Jag could become one of the lightest crossovers on the market. Jaguar has really gotten into the aluminum game, and judging by XJ the know what they are doing.

Jaguar says that under the bonnet we’ll find a variety of fuel-efficient engines. Diesel versions will have either the new 2.2-liter diesel or a 3.0-liter V6 with two different power ratings. This should be enough to allow it to play with BMW and Mercedes. On the petrol side of things, we can expect a new 3.7-liter V6 or turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the Range Rover Evoque. Regardless of what engine is selected, it should be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

However, we don’t expect customers will be wanting to take a leather-clad, chrome-covered Jag off-roading, even if it has AWD.
