Word has it British automaker Jaguar is considering a small front-wheel drive vehicle that would help the company meet increasingly stringent CO2 regulations.
According to Autocar, the automaker’s upcoming compact saloon and crossover models might not be enough to lower Jaguar Land Rover’s fleet average CO2 emissions to meet 2020 regulations. This scenario could push the company to develop a frugal front-wheel drive vehicle in the near future.
On the other hand, Jaguar is worried that such a model will have limited commercial success and a final decision won’t be made until 2016, when the automaker’s first crossover hits the market, our source adds.
“As a designer, I’d love to create a small car with Jaguar’s name on,” said Jaguar design boss Ian Callum. “But I have lots of projects I’d like to do — and few expectations of there being a business case for them.”
