Jaguar’s decision to build an SUV was not an open and shut case, but when Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum said last year they are discussing such a vehicle daily, we presumed it was really coming in 2015 as the media reports indicated.
However, Callum has reconsidered his decision and now says Jaguar has no plans to build an SUV.
I can categorically say that an SUV, as such, is out of the question. We have a sister company [Land Rover] that produces the best SUVs in the world," he said, adding that there might still be what he call “gray areas” in the market they could investigate.
No further details as to what this gray car might be were provided by Callum in his interview with Car Advice, but a possibility would be a jacked up normal car, much like Audi’s Allroad.
We have no desire to see Jaguar make such a car, but we’d love to know why they aren’t making the SUV any more. One reason might be that the Evoque is already a hit, and Land Rover wants to make an extended version. With BMW, Audi and Mercedes all making new SUVs in coming years, the market does indeed seem crowded.
However, one question still remain: what about the AWD system they were developing, is that also getting the boot?
