Jaguar Land Rover is planning to enter the electric car market and to launch a team in the Formula E electric car-racing series.
Through this move, Britain’s biggest car manufacturer, owned by Indian group Tata Motors, will join other big names from the industry such as Renault, Audi and Peugeot, all present in Formula E.
JLR is expected to make an official announcement in a press conference sometime next week, but a number of details must be finalized until then, including the accreditation from the FIA.
According to Sky News, Jaguar will join the Formula E championship because it’s an opportunity to develop new green technologies that can be later used in road cars.
The move from Jaguar comes right after it announced its best-ever November sales performance. Another British company, Williams, decided to join Formula E as well, after its long lasting presence in Formula 1.
Jaguar also raced in Formula 1 until 2004, when Ford sold the team to Red Bull. After that, Red Bull Racing became one of the winningest teams in the F1 championship, with several driver and constructor world titles achieved in just a few racing seasons.
It was a busy year for JLR, as it spent around 3 billion pounds on products and facilities, and it even has plans to build a new factory in Slovakia. The company has also launched a program to cut costs by 4.5 billion pounds by the end of the decade.
Formula E was conceived in 2012, but the first championship started in Beijing in 2014. The second season started this year in October and it consists of 11 races in 10 different cities. A lot of drivers who are now competing in this newly created championship were once driving in Formula 1.
Names like Sebastien Buemi, Jerome D’Ambrosio or Lucas di Grassi are well known to F1 fans. Sam Bird, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Nicolas Prost are also worth mentioning because they had some good results in the previous season.
Piquet Jr. and Prost are the sons of F1 legends Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost, respectively. It might bring back some memories when you see these names together competing in a Formula branded championship, but as some drivers came to Formula E from F1, it wouldn’t be impossible for these two drivers to bring the well-known surnames back in F1, the highest class of single-seat auto racing.
