Jaguar F-Pace Wins Land Rover Discovery Sport, Ford Edge Comparison Review

Even though President Obama bailed out the big three American automakers, they were all in panic mode, and they made some rushed decisions. One of them saw Ford selling Jaguar and Land Rover to the Indians. Within a few years, the brands became hugely profitable, so it's fair to say that it was one of Ford's worst decisions ever.

Fast forward to 2016 and Jaguar, Ford and Land Rover are all competing for the same piece of crossover property. The arrival of the Edge in Britain places an American car squarely against Jaguar's first soft-roader. But can either of them do anything against the grand masters at Land Rover?

Available from £30,000, the Edge is the cheapest of the bunch, but at just £5,000 more, the F-Pace is pretty close. It's a bit like choosing between a VW Golf and a BMW 1 Series - at the end of the day, it comes down to options and what you can finance.

The way in which the Ford Edge is designed clearly copies the Land Rover clamshell hood. Mat from Carwow put it in an amusing way at the 2:20 point of the video review. If you want to have a good laugh, check that out.

Picking a winner in the looks department is easy, thanks to Ian Callum, a man who once swore he'd never design a crossover. However, if I'd ever buy an SUV, I would prefer to go all the way with the rugged appearance that Discovery Sport has. Why pretend to have a sports car?

The Ford Edge also falls short in the interior quality department, something which you'd expect from the consumption-driven US market. We saw the same thing with the Jeep Cherokee.

The Discovery Sport has two advantages in the interior department. One is that it's perfect for installing a baby seat and the other that it comes as standard with a 7-seat configuration, at least in Britain. Sure, they are small places, but very few cars can take seven people to a party, so it's cool as well as practical.

But the Ford Edge has the widest second row and the biggest trunk. Carwow says that makes it the most useful of the bunch, but we disagree. You see, a big load lip is something that could annoy you every day, nullifying the extra space you might get when rarely carrying XXL items.

The Ford Edge is a failure in the off-road department. Spinning a wheel in the air is unacceptable when you are paying premium car money. And despite being fitted with the twin-turbo 2-liter diesel from the Mondeo, it feels slower than the F-Pace and Land Rover which has 30 horsepower less. We don't think it's the engine that's the problem, but the gearbox.
