Every time somebody says "but high-performance SUVs don't make any sense," a German engineer from BMW M or AMG gets his wings. However, the Brits are also working on a hairy-chested 4x4, and it promises to be so bad it needs waxing.
This is the F-Pace SVR, probably one of the last Jaguars to get the supercharged V8. Or at least that's what we think is under the hood by the sound made while testing at the Nurburgring.
The exhaust pipes look the same, but the thump is unmistakably that of a supercharged 5.0-liter like the one in the F-Type.
It's hard to say exactly what the uber F-Pace will be like or what it will compete with. However, it could pack a lot more power than the Porsche Macan Turbo for less money. The segment is kind of divided right now, so the SVR and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 are likely to be the only ones with a V8 engine. However, both Audi and BMW will do just fine with 6-cylinder units.
We don't expect a high level of tune for the engine, since the F-Pace needs to be careful not to step on the toes of the Range Rover Sport.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't be excited. Just look at this fully camouflaged test prototype racing down the Nurburgring like it's never seen a dirt road in its life.
Jaguar would be crazy not to make this car, as the F-Pace is already its most popular model ever. Since they can't keep up with demand anyway, why not increase profitability by charging for a larger engine and bigger brakes.
What will it cost? Well, our best guess is somewhere between $70,000 and $80,000. That's a bargain considering what you can spend for a bigger yet not more practical BMW X6 M. The Jaguar won't be as technologically advanced as its German rivals, but it should still be good for 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.something seconds.
