Jaguar EV-Type Trademark Applied, Watch Out Tesla!

Checking out trademark applications on the US Patent and Trademark Office website is like fishing - you never know when the lake monster is going to bite. Today it did, as we found that Jaguar took reserve over the “EV-Type” name.

Jaguar Land Rover applied for the EV-Type trademark on October 30th this year. In fact it applied both for USA and Europe, which could mean there’s a new car in the pipeline, this time an alternative-fuel one.

Although the description of the trademark tells it could be anything, we’re pretty sure the “-Type” part is a dead giveaway to a new model which should be all electric.

What could it be?

Circumstances makes us think the EV-Type could be the electric version of the current F-Type and that’s because the concept on which the model is based on, namely the Jaguar C-X16, was unveiled as a hybrid electric in 2011.

It could also be a V6 hybrid electric powered F-Type, but that wouldn’t make much sense with the EV-Type name, where “EV” obviously stands for electric vehicle.

Still, an all electric performance coupe is kinda risky for the company, especially because people love the F-Type for it’s fierce V8 and screaming V6. Not sure how many would consider the same car making no sound at all. That’s why you get the droptop, to hear that petrol-powered orchestra that’s almost going extinct. It definitely plays a huge role in the F-Type’s DNA.

Considering this, Jaguar might let the F-Type marque unaltered and move to a luxury EV sedan that could go after the Tesla Model S. Idea that definitely sounds a lot better than fooling around with the best coupe the automaker did in recent times.

Oh, you’re too unfamiliar with Jaguar and the only *letter*-Type model you know is the oldschool E-Type from which the F borrows part of its charm? I’ll then raise you the S-Type and the X-Type models, which were both sedans from the early 2000s.

Moreover, rumors are that Land Rover is also considering offering an electric Range Rover to compete against the Tesla Model X, so under these circumstances, a Jaguar EV sedan model could make more competitive sense.
