Jaguar E-Type 50th Anniversary Celebration Rocks London

Earlier today, we made sure that you are prepared for a future Jaguar E-Type 50th anniversary party. But while we were writing, we realised that we had forgotten to present you an E-Type 50th birthday party that took place in London yesterday.

The event, which was held at London’s Design Museum, saw legendary test driver Norman Dewis, who this year turns 9, and John Surtees, only man to win World championships on two and four wheels unveil a stunning 1961 E-Type, which has recently been restored.

The vehicle has been loaned by Classic Motor Cars (CMC) of Bridgnorth in Shropshire, which approached the museum about having an example of the vehicle to exhibit for the celebration of the 50th anniversary.

"We thought that it would be fitting if the first event to celebrate the anniversary could be held at London's Design Museum," said Peter Neumark, the Chairman of CMC. "The car has become a design classic that has endured over the years and we were delighted when the museum agreed."

Up until 1961 people had associated motoring beauty with either Italy or Germany but here was a beautiful car which had been built and designed in the UK -it was a must have," said F1 Champion John Surtees. “The E-type has the Jekyll and Hyde personality that every good sports car must have, fierce at one moment, and docile the next."

The event also included the display of the Jaguar Heritage Trust's E-Type 77 RW, one of the original press cars from 1961.
