Porsche has the 911, Ferrari makes the 458 V8 supercar and Lotus’ image centers around the Elise. But until now, Jaguar hasn’t had its own car around which all others gravitate.
From now on, the F-Type will play just such a role for the automaker, and future models, like the rumored small sedan to rival the 3-Series will have to draw inspiration from this.
Jaguar boss Adrian Hallmark told Autocar magazine on the sidelines of the Paris Motor Show that the F-Type is their “orientation point.”
“Without a sports car in our range, it has been possible for people to lose orientation about what Jaguar stands for. Other manufacturers who have strayed successfully from their core range have only done so if they have continued to invest in that model,” said Hallmark, obviously referring to Porsche and their 911.
The Jaguar boss also defended against price criticism, saying the new F-Type offers Porsche 911 or Aston Martin Vantage performance for less money.
