Swiss timepiece makers IWC Schaffhausen and Mercedes-AMG have been working together for some time now, but their new timepiece truly is unique. Limited to only 25 units, the Ingenieur Automatic Edition is paying tribute to the company’s new Grand Tourer. It was unveiled at the 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting.
We sort of were already expecting a new model to celebrate the second vehicle built entirely in-house by the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz. However, instead of being present at this year’s Baselworld fair, IWC chose for a more intimate occasion. On the other hand, IWC Schaffhausen is a Timing Partner for the renowned Goodwood Members Meeting, so it was only natural for them to come up with something special for the occasion.

In order to mark the event, the two companies also organized a race between the legendary first AMG racing car, the new sportscar, and a Mercedes F1 W04. “While the super-tuned engines were revving up a storm, somewhere just off the 3.8-kilometer track in West Sussex, England, was the barely perceptible ticking of a trailblazing new product,” IWC describes the special event.

The Swiss manufacturer claims it’s the first timepiece in the world featuring a case made of boron carbide, which is currently the hardest ceramic of them all. According to IWC, the watch also commemorates IWC’s ten-year partnership with Mercedes. It’s not just the unique material which is almost as hard as a diamond and as light as aluminum that stands out.

IWC’s newborn comes with a high-precision in-house 80110-calibre, which features an integrated shock-absorption system and is one of the most robust movements made by the company. The eye-catching screws in the bezel and crown are made of black zirconium oxide. The see-through sapphire glass back reveals a high-precision mechanical movement.

Moreover, the Swiss luxury timepiece maker claims the watch features the same innovative microfibre used by Mercedes-AMG to pad the steering wheel, seat upholstery and headliner in the actual Grand Tourer.
