It’s EQV Time: Mercedes-Benz Unveils Its "First Fully-Electric Premium MPV"

Following a near-production concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQV has come out of hiding. It’s the “first fully-electric premium MPV” from the German automaker, and if you look beyond the multi-purpose vehicle shenanigans, Mercedes-Benz has a winner on its hands.

Based on the W447 (a.k.a. third-generation V-Class), the EQV promises 405 kilometers from a 100-kWh battery with 90 kWh of usable capacity. That more than 250 miles on a full charge, which takes less than 10 hours at an 11-kWh wallbox or public charging station. Using 110-kW DC charging translates to 45 minutes of waiting for the Li-Ion battery to level up from 10 to 80 percent.

Front-wheel drive by nature, the EQV relies on a single electric motor with 204 PS (150 kW) and 362 Nm on tap. That’s 160 km/h (100 mph) on full song, which is not bad for a vehicle this large and heavy. The GVW stands at 3,500 kilograms, which goes to show how much of an effort the powertrain has to make.

"Our MPVs meet the highest standards in terms of functionality and variability,” said Marcus Breitschwerdt, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. “The EQV also does not compromise in this respect. It offers comfortable handling, dynamic electro-aesthetics, intuitive operation, and generous space – and all locally emissions-free.” We don’t exactly agree with the lattermost part given the production process and how electricity is made, but then again, that’s how PR works.

To be presented in the flesh this fall at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, the EQV will be manufactured alongside the V-Class and Vito at Vitoria in northern Spain. Available with six, seven, or eight seats, the e-MPV also features the latest MBUX infotainment system, a 10-inch multimedia display, and eco-optimized navigation with active range monitoring.

Depending on the equipment fitted to the vehicle, the luggage compartment of the EQV can take in as much as 1,030 liters of whatever you fancy. As with the V-Class, customers can choose between two lengths and two wheelbases: 5,140 or 5,370 millimeters with 3,200 or 3,430 millimeters.
