Italy on Its Way to 27 Years in Jail Penalties for Drunk Drivers Who Cause Deadly Accidents

The noose is getting tighter for those who believe that drinking and driving go well together, or those who see no problem in operating vehicles on public roads while under the influence of drugs.

The new bill enforces raised jail penalties for those who cause deadly accidents while driving under the influence. Under the new law, if a motorist is under the influence of alcohol or drugs and he or she causes a crash in which a person loses their life, the minimum penalty is seven and eight years, respectively.

In accordance with the raised minimum penalties, the maximum ones have increased, as well, and they normally reach 18 years of imprisonment, in case of multiple deaths.

On paper, the maximum penalty can reach 27 years in jail

However, the maximum penalty for traffic homicide can reach as high as 27 years, insella reports. The same source adds that no traffic homicides have been punished in such a drastic way, but on paper, it is doable. A driver killing multiple individuals while being drunk or using drugs, who flees from the accident site and tries to alter the circumstances of the crime could be in for such a "treat".

Being caught driving with a BAC higher than 1.5 grams/liter will result in 7 to 12 years in jail. If the driver is transporting people, he or she can receive the same penalty for a BAC exceeding 0.8 gr /liter. BAC figures above 08 gr/l but under the mentioned 1.5 gr/l and with no drug usage can result in 7 to 10 years. Penalties in case of drug use are one year bigger.

The bill might receive various amends until it reaches the next vote in the Chamber of Deputies, but it's more than certain that Italy is in the fast lane for reduced tolerance to alcohol and drug use in conjunction with operating a vehicle on public roads. And this is awesome!
