Italians Strike Back with a New Enzo Biopic Getting in the Works

Some of our readers pointed out the obvious the other day: it’s not really fair for Hollywood to take all the credit for an Italian icon, having Robert de Niro playing the role of Enzo Ferrari in a new biopic. That won’t stop Los Angeles producers from making the movie, of course. It also won’t stop Italian directors from making their biopic too, which is exactly what’s going on. When we heard the rumors that Robert de Niro is about to play Enzo Ferrari’s role in an upcoming Hollywood pic and that Clint Eastwood might even direct it we were quite surprised and sceptic about it. In a way, the Italian heritage is well kept since the motion picture will be produced by Gianni Bozzachi, an Italian name that’s been known all around Hollywood for years. As we reported, Bozzachi’s Triworld Cinema has already reached an agreement with De Niro’s company, Tribeca Enterprises. What about the other biopic?

However, the surprise wasn’t necessarily related to whom is producing the biopic, but it rather has something to do with a different aspect we wrote of last year. There is already a biopic in the works for years now. Based on Brock Yates’ book titled “Enzo Ferrari: The man, the Cars, the Races”, the movie was originally planned to be filmed in 2004, having Al Pacino playing the role of the man that created automotive history.

Last year rumors claimed the crew behind it have once again pushed the pedal and are working to make it happen.

Now, Variety claims the shooting of this movie is going as planned. In fact, Michael Mann and L.A.-based Cecchi Gori media are in final development stages on their “Ferrari” biopic. It appears the first scenes will be shot next year while the precise release date has yet to be announced.

Judging by the Robert de Niro movie schedule, we might be looking at some sort of a race between the two crews. Which of the two will win and which is the closest to the actual life of the iconic character is a matter you guys will have to judge.
