Italian Minister Asks for Luca di Montezemolo Resignation

Ferrari was in pole position to win a Formula One title this season, yet Fernando Alonso failed to bring home the necessary result in Abu Dhabi in order for that to happen. And that led to intense criticism for the Scuderia back home, in Italy. However, it wasn't all directed at the 2-time world champion, but at the very head of the Ferrari organization, Luca di Montezemolo.

Following the ruined Abu Dhabi finale for Ferrari, Roberto Calderoni, a minister in the Berlusconi cabinet, asked for Di Montezemolo to resign from his position at Maranello.

Despite the ability of the excellent Alonso, Ferrari has managed to lose a championship already won,” said the aforementioned minister, while adding: “we are ashamed of this insane strategy and he (Montezemolo) is guilty.

He should get out of Maranello immediately so he does no further harm to Ferrari. By the evening, we expect his resignation,” he concluded.

During the recent Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso's failure to get the job done was strictly related to pit strategy. The Spaniard pitted early in the race and was stuck in traffic for the remainder of the Sunday action, eventually being forced to spend the whole afternoon behind Renault's Vitaly Petrov.

Nevertheless, after the race, Alonso avoided to point any fingers at his team, saying that the strategy could have played out either way.

Afterwards it is very easy to see the best strategy. This is a sport and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Congratulations to Red Bull and Sebastian (Vettel), next year we will try again,” said the Ferrari-an.

Luca di Montezemolo also responded to the critics after the race, saying that Ferrari will bounce back next season.

Sometimes winners lose, but we do not give up. There are some small people who systematically root against the country and its symbols. Luckily they are the minority,” said the Ferrari boss, emphasizing the political implications of the critics.
