A little kitten got a little more than it’s bargained for when it accidentally hitched a ride in the undercarriage of a Volkswagen Atlas. It’s now safe, after a spectacular rescue operation.
The kitten has been named Chance, after the name of one of the officers that helped out in the rescue operation, the New York Post reports. It took 7 officers and the NYC’s Special Operations Bureau and a car jack to retrieve her safely from under the car, but it was done in the end.
The driver tells the publication that he’d just started on his way from Brooklyn to Harlem, New York, when he saw a cat in the middle of the road. Like any decent driver and human being would do, he did his best to avoid hitting it and then pulled over to look for it and see if it was ok. To his surprise, the cat had vanished into thin air, so assuming it had fled away, he got back in his car and completed the 18-mile ride.
When he arrived in Harlem and got out of his SUV, he heard meows from under the car. An officer was passing pay, so he flagged him down and, in a matter of minutes, an entire team had assembled, working together to get the cat out.
According to the police, it looked as if the terrified cat had traveled all that distance clinging to the undercarriage. It was 28 degrees outside and the cold wind made it feel much colder than that. Think about that the next time you want to shrug off the idea that cats are natural born badasses.
