Betteridge's law of headlines says that "any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." That certainly applies here, as we want to show you some photos that are clearly fake.
Four crisp photos of the supposed Megane RS 5-door hatchback emerged on a French Facebook group. They look a little too good to be true. Instead of just writing a standard story, we decided to group our reasons into easily understood points:

1. Renault officials have said development of the next Megane RS has not started yet. Some sources suggest a 1.8-liter turbo will be used, while others say the RS will become a hybrid. Either way, seeing photos now is like looking at chicken eggs before dinosaurs existed.

2. Some of the elements on these renderings are iffy. For example, the front fenders are very clearly widened while the rear ones aren't.

3. The exhaust pipes and diffuser look like they were stolen from a Spyker. Their design doesn't fit the Renaultsport look.

4. Yes, the key has a "Renault Sport" logo and a checkered motif. But a quick Google search will reveal that's just a press photo of the Megane GT keycard.

5. Right next to the keycard, there's an electric parking brake switch. If Renault suddenly started using one of those on the RS, people would literally form a lynching mob and go to Dieppe.

Our money is on the Megane RS being available only as a 5-door without hybrid tech sometime in late 2017. Compared to its predecessor, the new Megane is a simpleton, as its biggest engine is a 1.6-liter and it uses semi-rigid rear suspension. However, all that is hidden under LED lights, all-wheel-steering and shiny paint. It will take a lot of hard work from the French engineers to polish this car into the next hot hatch king.

But then again, this could be Renault playing tricks on us to drum up interest for the real Megane RS.
