Is This the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia? Unofficial Design Sketches Leak

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is currently on the brink of injecting some new life into the Alfa Romeo brand by refreshing the aging line-up with the all-new 2016 Giulia sedan. It looks like we might just have a taste of the Giulia ahead of its release next month, and it’s all thanks to what are, most likely, its design sketches.

The unofficial drawings were made by Greek designer Malandrinos Konstantinos (via Corsa Italia). If the story proves to be true, we’re looking at a winner here, at least as far as the eye is concerned.

The car makes use of plenty of styling tricks that make it appear wide and low, while the front end is unmistakably Alfa, from the iconic grille to the little details. At the rear, the trunk reminds us of the 4C, while the taillights spell “Giulietta”.

Nevertheless, the posterior of the car also makes us think of the Maserati Ghibli, a car that is about the same size as the Giulia. To put this into perspective, we’ll explain the Alfa will sit in between the compact and the mid-size executive offerings from German brands.

Nothing is official yet, but the Giulia should also ride on the Ghibli’s RWD platform. This way, the wait for Alfa to replace the FWD 159 will be worth it. In fact, the Giulia test vehicles we’ve spied were dressed as Ghiblis.

The Giulia will lead Alfa’s reinvention process

This will also be the model that will kick-start Alfa Romeo’s reinvention process. For one thing, the size and the RWD architecture will allow the company to take on the US market, where competitors such as Lexus and Infiniti are enjoying the market alongside the German triumvirate. However, the automaker could use a different name for the American market.

Moreover, Alfa Romeo has set itself a target of hitting 400,000 annual sales by 2018, which is quite a boost when you consider the company sold about 74,000 cars last year.

Alfa Romeo will introduce the Giulia on June 24, while the vehicle is set to arrive Stateside in the first months of next year.
