Is This Porsche 356 E Concept the All-Electric Car Porsche Needs?

Just like many carmakers at the moment, Porsche has only been scratching the surface in terms of alternative powertrains. But for Porsche, the apex of such experiments turned out to be a state-of-the-art sports hybrid - the 918 Spyder.

They also adopted plug-in hybrid powertrains for their best-seller Cayenne SUV and the Panamera. In addition, Stuttgart officials recently confirmed that we’ll see a hybrid Porsche 911 by 2020. Which makes us wonder when will they come up with an all-electric model? That’s a though guess to take, but until Porsche decides to move in one direction or another, someone is doing their job easier. At least, they’re trying to, in terms of design.

Anyway, you know that a carmaker is doing design right since like...forever when all the freelance designers out there want to mix old design cues with more modern approaches. This also stands for Bez Dimitri and his Porsche 356 E all-electric concept.

The name says it all and there’s no doubt that while looking at the design study, you’ll be able to spot some shapes belonging to the classic Porsche 356 lightweight sports car from the late ‘40s. There are also a lot of features imported from the 918 Spyder, which should make the prototype look good. But there’s a drawback to that.

Although we do like the idea of borrowing some of the 356’s looks, we’re a bit unsettled by that big hunchback that Porsche would never allow to grow on its cars. However, Bez calls that an ‘elevated rear’ which houses the battery pack and the electric motor. We’re also not sure about the concept’s aerodynamic coefficient which is supposed to be as low as the economy since the entire purpose of the car is aiming at a high electric range and maximum efficiency.

We’d really like to hear you opinion on this one, but don’t be too hard on the guy. After all, it’s just a design study.
