For multiple reasons, both Ford and the various organizations that track vehicle sales across the world like to call the Mustang a sports car. People like to call it a pony car, but regardless of the moniker, it is without a doubt one of the most successful cars in its segment currently on the market.
With four months of the year nearly over, companies are still counting the wins and losses of 2019, and so does Ford. When it comes to the Mustang, it’s all about the wins, though.
Last year, there were 102,090 Mustangs sold all over the world, unevenly distributed among the 12 different versions now available. That number makes the model, according to data compiled by IHS Markit, the best-selling sports car on the planet, and also the world’s best selling sports coupe. It's for the fifth time in a row that the Mustang earns this distinction in the sports coupe category.
“We’re proud of our growing Mustang stable and performance variants,” said in a statement Jim Farley, chief operating officer, Ford Motor Company.
“From Sweden to Shanghai, more and more driving enthusiasts are enjoying the feeling of freedom and the American open road in these new Mustangs. We are honored to serve our owners, enthusiasts and fans for 56 years and counting.”
Born in 1964, the Mustang is presently in its sixth generation. Since it entered the market in 2015, the current version sold around 633,000 units in 146 countries.
Part of that growth is supported by the fact that the Mustang – and its segment as a whole – is becoming increasingly popular in markets that until now were not that friendly to it. For reference, Mustang sales increased in 2019 by 33 percent in Germany, 50 percent in Poland, and doubled in size in France.
To honor the Mustang and its many incarnations, we've put together a massive photo gallery celebrating the model.
