Listen carefully to the exhaust sound of the Jaguar F-Type test vehicle in the video below. To our ears, it appears that this is less than what the F-Type V6 has to offer in terms of aural treatment, which could mean that Jaguar is out testing a four-cylinder engine on the Nurburgring.
There have been rumors of a four-cylinder F-Type, so the move would make full sense. Nonetheless, the source of the power is still an important mystery. You see, Jaguar has previously stated that its sportscars wouldn’t adopt turbo technology due to the non-linear power delivery.

At the same time, Jaguar admitted the fact that supercharging on a four-cylinder engine kind of defeats the whole downsizing process, since the efficiency of the process is inferior to that of turbocharging.

Despite the sound in the adjacent video seeming to include a supercharger winning at times, this seems like the least likely version. For one thing, it wouldn’t make sense for Jaguar to develop a supercharged four-cylinder engine only for the F-Type. That’s because the four-pot story goes way beyond the company’s sports car.

Jaguar is preparing to introduce an all-new four-cylinder engine family called “Ingenium”. The fresh mills will spread quite far withing Jaguar Land Rover, as they are expected to power the upcoming XE compact sports sedan, the production version of the C-X17 crossover, as well as various future Land Rover models, such as some of the members of the upcoming Discovery family.
