Ironic Bug Breaks Down Android Auto on Google’s Very Own Phones

As long-time Android Auto probably know already, the lack of consistency is one of the biggest problems with this app, as everything could run perfectly fine today only to be broken down all of a sudden tomorrow.

The issues experienced with Android Auto affect a wide variety of phone brands, including Samsung and LG, but more recently, there’s a new error that seems to be hitting Google’s own phones exclusively.

Users are reporting that running Android Auto with a Google Pixel 3a XL no longer works, as the phone is listed as incompatible. Furthermore, installing Android Auto from the Play Store fails, as the “device isn’t compatible with this version.”

Many say the whole thing started happening after a recent update, but for now, it’s still not clear how to revert the changes and get Android Auto up and running with the Google Pixel 3a XL.

Google has already acknowledged the issue and said it’s already investigating, but no workaround has been offered until today.

Thanks for reaching out. We've forwarded the issue to the rest of the team. Could you check if you are able to download Android Auto for phone screens app from the Play Store? Starting from Android 10, Android Auto is embedded on the phone,” a member of the Android Auto team said.

Thanks for all the feedback. We'll forward this thread to the rest of the team. We'll update this thread when we have any further news to share. Thanks for your patience," he added.

Sideloading Android Auto using the standalone APK installer doesn’t seem to work, as in this case, Pixel 3a XL owners encounter a different error telling them to reach out to Google.

Google is still investigating at the time of writing and a workaround to restore Android Auto on the impacted devices does not exist.
