On the market since 1968, Toyota’s Hilux pickup is one of Europe’s oldest nameplates in the segment. At the same time one of Toyota’s main offerings in this particular market, the Hilux got a major refresh for 2020, detailed this week by the Japanese carmaker.
The changes envisioned by Toyota include everything from visual and comfort upgrades to a more consistent addition of a new powertrain. All will become real by the end of the year, when the new Hilux officially hits the roads.

Visually, the new interpretation of the pickup truck comes with a new front end – the main traits are a more impressive front grille and bumper – and a restyled rear end, featuring new LED light clusters. New wheel designs and new colors (3 of them) have also been thrown into the mix.

The technology offering has been expanded as well. Inside, the new Hilux now boasts a revamped 8-inch touchscreen, and the pickup has been made Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.

The powertrain lineup got upgraded with the addition of a new engine, a 2.8-liter one that is capable of developing 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. To be available for the Extra Cab and Double Cab body styles, the engine will come with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel-drive, and a 0-100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time rated at 10 second flat.

Another big development for the range is the birth of a new grade for the truck. Called Invincible, it becomes the top of the range Hilux and is unique in its own way: bespoke grille and bumper, skid plate, over fenders, door handles, wheel and tailgate designs. The Invincible is available on the Extra Cab and Double Cab variants of the new Hilux.

Toyota says the new interpretation of the pickup truck becomes available in Eastern Europe in July and in Western Europe in October. Pricing was not announced.
