Insignia Dominates UK D-Segment in March with 68% Sales Increase

Vauxhall’s Insignia led the increasing competitive D-segment in the UK last month, according to figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The total March sales of 7,826 units represent a massive increase of 68.92 percent over the same month of last year, as the award-winning model grabs sales from both retail and corporate customers.

“One of only two D-segment cars to feature in the UK’s top-ten sales league, the Insignia also proved immensely popular with business users,” the carmaker says, highlighting the fact that fleet sales have jumped a massive 147 percent compared to March 2010. As a result, Vauxhall now leads the D-segment when it comes to fleet sales.

With 11,904 units shifted by UK dealers in the first three month of the year, the Insignia also leads D-segment sales for the fourth quarter of the year, outpacing its closest rival, the BMW 3-Series, by over 1,700 units.

“But passenger cars weren’t Vauxhall’s only success last month. Sales of its commercial vehicles were up over 56 per cent year-on-year, added to which March saw Vauxhall take its largest share ever of the retail van market at 18.36 percent, the second time in three months that the Luton-based manufacturer has re-written its record books,” Vauxhall adds.

“We’re naturally very pleased with these results. Not only are vehicles like the Insignia, Zafira, Vivaro and Movano leading the way in each of their sectors, but we’re also steadily increasing our market share, year on year. Overall, we now have 12.01 per cent of all UK vehicle sales – that’s nearly one per cent up year-to-date. With cars like the new Zafira Tourer, Astra GTC and Ampera all well on their way towards UK showrooms, we’re confident we can build still further on this success,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director.
