Insane Range for Low Bucks Is What the Commuter E-Bike From State Bicycle Co. Is All About

No, the e-bike and electric mobility wave we've been experiencing lately is not slowing down. On the contrary, we're now starting to see more and more affordable machines meant to captivate our lifestyles.

For example, the freshly unveiled 6061 eBike Commuter machine from State Bicycle Co. is an e-bike that clocks in at no more than $1,500 (€1,400 at current exchange rates), minus a penny. And while this low a rate usually means that certain capabilities are hindered, not the Commuter; it showcases a range of up to 100 miles (161 kilometers)!

Ok, so I may be getting ahead of myself. First, let me point out a few details about the minds and hands behind this trinket, State Bicycle Co. If you've never heard of this crew, you just need to know that they've been around since 2009 and are bent on providing affordable and quality products built right here in the U.S. of A. Most of the machines they build are made with steel and aluminum, one reason why they're able to keep prices so low.

Now, why the Commuter is so dang important is because it's the very first e-bike that State throws at would-be customers, and frankly, State seems to be hitting all the right keys with this one. So far, you know that this puppy is an EV, that it's built using aluminum, and how much it costs, not to mention that insane range. So, how did all of this happen?

Well, as I mentioned, this is State's first e-bike, so they're bound to drop a machine meant to make an impression. As I was researching this trinket, I realized that the numbers are indeed impressive. Starting with this sucker's weight, a mere 38.8 lbs (17.6 kg) is all you'll be lugging around, and most of that weight is due to the battery hidden in the down tube, an LG battery array with 10 Ah of juice.

With the Commuter's level one assist mode, that 100-mile range can be touched, and with level five assist, the strongest setting, up to 24 miles (38.6 kilometers), is the max range. What's this mean for you, the urban rider? It means going to work, grocery shopping, and taking a ride around town at sunset, all without having to charge your bike except once every two days, maybe even three, depending on how hard you hit those pedals.

All that brings us to the motor that State has chosen for the Commuter. Looking at the rear of this bike, you'll be able to spot a 250-watt motor with brushless action. Sure, it may sound small, but this is an urban bicycle, meaning that the 20 mph (32 kph) assist this puppy can crank out is more than enough to zip through traffic and pedestrians.

A couple more features that I want to point out are the presence of several mounts tattered on the bike and what else to expect for $1,500. Regarding the mounts, there are a couple for water bottle cages, but there seem to be some mounts on the seat stay; pannier racks, anyone? As for a couple of other things to note on the Commuter, you've got that sleek black fixie setup, an easy-to-use controller, and LCD display mounted to the handlebar, but no suspension. Just a pair of Kenda 45c e-bike-ready tires. As a final strong point, this puppy can handle 330 lbs (150 kg) of total weight, enough for the bigger kids among us.

At the end of the day, the Commuter seems like the sort of e-bike that's primed and ready to sweep up a few customers, and if State keeps up this sort of activity, it won't be long until more and more people are spotted sporting a State 6061 eBike Commuter.
