Insane Exhaust System Is Made From a Huge Turbo with Two Cone Air Filters

We've just spotted one of the most insane mufflers ever made. It looks like somebody forgot how a turbocharger worked and decided to reinvent the wheel as it were.

As you can see from the photo above, which shows the underbelly of a custom Corvette ZR1, the final muffler is gone. Its job would have been to clean up the air of some exhaust particles and reduce the noise "pollution" from that supercharged V8 engine.

However, there's no room for such compromise in motorsport, or at least we think this is a motorsport application since it comes from the racing gods of D3 Performance. They've made plenty of Corvette, Supra and RX-7 drag machines with over 1000 horsepower. Is this their next one?

The ZR1's two mid pipes are now connected to what looks like a gigantic turbocharger from a truck. We also noticed two gigantic cone air filters linked using 5-inch pipes. And how could you not notice them when they are so weirdly placed.

Right behind the rear bumper is the last place you should put air filters on a regular car. For instance, they will get instantly clogged with dirt or burnt rubber, which there will be a lot of in a turbocharged V8 drag racer. Sports filters are also really bad of coping with water, so you can't drive this car in the rain.

Some components are probably still missing on this custom turbo setup. For example, we don't see any intercoolers or the cold air pipes going back to the engine. After all, that's why you install a turbocharger in the first place – to force more air into the engine using the pressure of exhaust gasses.

We've also found another custom turbo system made by D3 Performance. This time, the Corvette engine is linked to two smaller turbochargers installed in the same place. You can also see how the cold air is piped through the rocker panel, where the Viper has its exhaust.
