Infiniti's Very Own M Hybrid Scheduled for 2010

Infiniti will officially roll out its very own hybrid model in 2010, according to the latest media reports, as the Japanese automaker will debut a hybrid version of the next-generation M sedan. Although parent firm Nissan has been present in the hybrid market for some time, none of its models were actually based on a hybrid system 100 percent developed within the company. The Altima sedan for example also comes in a hybrid version but it is mostly based on technology provided by Toyota, the folks over at MotorAuthority.com wrote.

Now, it may seem like Infiniti is finally ready to launch its own hybrid model but only a little is known at this point. The Nikkei business publication informed that the hybrid powerplant expected to be installed on the M sedan will rely on lithium-ion batteries, described by Infiniti's engineers as the best solution to ensure a high output and quick recharge times.

In addition, the aforementioned source writes that the system will incorporate two clutches which eliminate the need for conventional torque converters.

Obviously, the model will feature three driving modes, as it follows: electric mode for driving at low speeds without the need for gasoline, gasoline and electric for regular cruising speeds and petrol only for higher speeds.

Aside from this report, Infiniti recently presented at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show the Essence hybrid concept, a new model which is said to provide very high power combined with very low fuel consumption.

"Essence is a brand icon," Francois Bancon, General Manager Advanced Product Planning, said. "It is driven more by a conceptual approach than by any design execution. It is not just an object. It isn't a teaser for a new model. It is solely dedicated to Infiniti brand promotion, to demonstrate and advocate the Infiniti unique values."
