Infiniti Recalls Over 134,000 G35 Sedans and Coupes

Nissan Motor Company announced a recall for almost 134,215 Infiniti G35 luxury sedans and coupes. The recall is related to faulty airbags that may not deploy during a crash, U.S. regulators said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said as many as 134,215 G35 sedans from model years 2005-2006 and G35 coupes from model years 2005-2007 are subject to the recall. The recall applies for vehicles sold both in and outside of the United States, a Nissan official said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a wire harness for the airbags may wear down to the point that it could interrupt a signal to deploy the airbags in the event of a crash. In that case, airbags would not deploy, leading to significant injury of the passengers or even their death.

Nissan has yet to announce the official details of the recall and hasn’t informed federal officials yet about how the problem will be fixed, the NHTSA said. The Japanese automaker informed U.S. safety regulators of the potential problem two weeks ago, according to NHTSA reports. The report mentioned that no crashes or injuries related to this problem were reported.

The Infiniti G35 sedan and G35 coupe were launched in 2006. Both cars used a 3.5-liter V6 engine developing 306 horsepower. In 2009, both were replaced by the G37 variant, which gets a 330 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The car is a rival for German premium compact sedans as the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Klasse, but also for the Lexus IS.
