Infiniti IPL G Convertible Will Enter Production This Year

We all wondered at first why Infiniti wanted to bring their IPL G Convertible Concept to the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The hard-top four-seater landed in Paris last year, so it’s not exactly a newcomer to the wind-in-your-hair game. Well, the luxury division of Nissan has plans of a new model in mind.

IPL actually stands for Infiniti Performance Line, a range of products that offer extra exclusivity for those customers wanting to stand out. Soon, a new 2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible will join the Infiniti IPL G Coupe, according to an official announcement made by the company. The full production version of this new car will join the JX at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

“The Infiniti Performance Line, as demonstrated by our first offering, the IPL G Coupe, challenges the concept of an ultra-high cost sports series. IPL pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. “The IPL G Convertible will deliver the goods, just like the current IPL G Coupe does. Plus, the new IPL G Convertible offers the added pleasure of open-air motoring.”

The Infiniti designers and engineers went to town on the G37 convertible, making adjustments not only to the engine, but also to the looks of the car. The IPL-tuned 3.7-liter under the bonnet of the car makes 348 horsepower and 276 pound-feet of torque, going to the back wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Speaking of the wheels, the standard ones have been swapped for 19-inch ones. The cosmetic changes also include the same aggressive looking front end and as the coupe.

We love the look of this car, but we are a bit disappointed with the fact that Infiniti’s Performance Line offers something with less than 400 horsepower.
