Leading up to the launch of the 2014 Infiniti Q50 last year, Infiniti announced that it would continue selling the G37 Sedan, which the Q50 was designed to replace, until mid-2015. As if that wasn’t confusing enough, while all other Infiniti products switched over to the new Q and QX naming system, the G37 retained its name. Until now.
With no 2014 model year, the 2013 G37 will be renamed the 2015 Infiniti Q40 when it goes on sale next month. As production of the Q40 winds down, this sedan will only be available with limited options. As was the case with the 2013 G37, buyers have just four colors from which to choose, two option packages and the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive models.

It isn’t hard to see why Infiniti is keeping the 8-year-old sedan around. Even though the 2014 Infiniti Q50 has quickly positioned itself as the top-selling vehicle in the Infiniti lineup, the G37 is still the third-best-selling model in the lineup behind the Q50 and the three-row QX60 crossover. Through June, Infiniti has sold about as many Q50 sedans (18,006) as it did G37 sedans through the first six months of 2013 (18,006), and despite this even sales pace, Infiniti still managed to sell 8,441 of the carryover G37 sedan this year.

Aside from the name, nothing about the Q40 Sedan will be changing. Under the hood, the 2015 Q40 will be powered by a 328-hp, 3.7-liter V-6, which is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Rear-drive models continue to carry EPA-estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, while the all-wheel-drive versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Pricing has not been announced for the Q40, but it shouldn’t vary too much from the 2013 G37, which is currently priced $4,200 below the Q50 starting at $32,950. If you’re looking for a sporty, affordable and luxurious sedan and you don’t need the latest and greatest tech, the 2015 Infiniti Q40 should be an incredible buy.
