Infiniti GT-R is Dying

The economic crisis makes yet another victim amongst the once dreamt at vehicles. One of the oldest sought after vehicle on the automotive scene (rumors about it have been around for some two years now), the Infiniti badged GT-R sedan now has very poor chances of seeing production.

According to Brian Carolin, Nissan Sales and Marketing vice-president, the luxury GT-R is "just not a priority in today's climate." Even if the official hasn't specifically said that the Inifinti GT-R is out for good, it would seem that launching such a vehicle in these times might not be a smart move.

"It's just not a priority in today's climate. Our dealers would rather have something with more volume. Twelve months ago they would have said yes; now it's way down on their wish list," the vice president was quoted as saying by Inside Line.

And the bad news from Nissan doesn't stop here. The 2009 Geneva Auto Show witnessed the unveiling of the Infiniti Essence concept, a high-performance hybrid luxury vehicle. One month later, it would seem that's all it was for the Essence, as it too has left the manufacturer's priority list.

Meanwhile, the less pretentious 2010 Nissan GT-R, whose 3.8l twin turbo V6 engine would have been used on the Infiniti GT-R, has already hit some Nissan retailers, carefully selected by the manufacturer.

With a starting price of $80,790 for the GT-R, and $83,040 for the GT-R Premium, it becomes obvious why Nissan does not see an Infiniti badged GT-R as being a smart move. We won't count on it being out for good though, as better economic conditions might bring it back into the spotlight.
