The world's first premium electric vehicle, specifically built to be powered by electricity entered production today, at BMW's Leipzig plant, marking the beginning of a new, cleaner era for all of us.
This car is more than that though. This day will also mark the moment when industrial-scale manufacturing of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer makes its debut. This will be the first car that uses CFRP to such extent, to benefit from the material's characteristics and keep the weight of the EV in check.
All the CFRP needed for the cars that will be assembled in Leipzig will be produced in the US, at the Moses Lake plant, in collaboration with SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers and then shipped to Europe.
The plant located in North America will be using regenerable energy obtained from wind mills while also reducing its consumption by 50%. At the launch, Stanislaw Tillich, Minister President of the state of Saxony was present alongside Leipzig's mayor, Burkhard Jung.
“I’m proud that, in BMW, we have such an innovative carmaker here in Saxony and that BMW is building the i3 at its plant here in Leipzig. This proves that Saxony is an attractive location in terms of its research and educational institutions, its infrastructure and, most importantly, its highly qualified and motivated people,” said Tillich.
"The BMW plant has been a boon for our city from the beginning and continues to act as a growth engine for jobs. With BMW also basing production of its electric vehicles here, the prospects for the local area are extremely healthy,” added Jung.
