Indonesian Sharia-Inspired Regulation Makes Women Ride Sidesaddle

Indonesian province Aceh is governed according to Sharia, the Islamic law. Now, that could have passed unnoticed if the local authorities didn't rule women straddling motorcycles outside the Islamic teachings and forwarded a law to ban this.

Yep, forget about motorcycle safety and all, helmets and other similar mundane things: a woman riding behind a man are no longer allowed to straddle the bike, as the lawmakers deemed this a "risk to people's morals and behaviors".

The law could become fully effective after the one month testing period. However, some Muslims themselves have already voiced their objections, claiming that the religious texts have never said anything on how motorbikes should be ridden and even more, what is called Sharia (Islamic law) should be somewhat coherent with the common sense the public shares on specific matters, in case a new government law is to be passed.

Now, it looks like things are going either way: the project is abandoned due to its utter lack of sense, or it passes and motorbike-related accidents skyrocket. Or we're going to see a huge number of Indonesian motorcycle stunt riders in 10 to 15 years or so.
