The production of the BMW i8 faced some rather tough challenges. The Germans basically didn’t expect their sporty plug-in hybrid to be so popular and were overcome by the orders that were put in. Therefore, a couple of months ago the waiting list for one spread to over 18 months. Not for Abu Dhabi apparently.
Admittedly, BMW did say that they doubled the production of this particular car and are now making 20 of them per day at the plant in Leipzig but even so, the waiting list went down to four months, still a pretty long time to wait…
In the meantime, in the UAE, the BMW Abu Dhabi just took delivery of a special i8, one that first reminded us of the car put together by the guys from Manhart for the Essen Motor Show last year. That’s because unlike every other i8 out there, the character lines and all the highlights are done in yellow instead of the trademark i blue.
Depending on what the owner was going for this is a complete success or a total failure. A strong color like yellow doesn’t always translate into beauty. If the aim was to gather as much attention as needed, we think this is a success but if the plant was to make the i8 even better, we’re not so sure.
And why would you want to draw more attention anyway? The car is already looking like it’s coming from the future, how much more can you do to attract more eyes on you?
Since this is Abu Dhabi and the world’s wealthiest do roam its streets in the best cars money can buy, it does make some sort of sense but we reckon all it takes is to park this beauty in a mall’s parking lot and you’re guaranteed to turn a lot of heads as soon as you open the doors!
