The answer is simple: anyway you can. And that includes using that social network wonder called Facebook, together with the drivers' inherent predisposition to tell on other drivers.
According to The New York Times, the New Delhi police set up their own Facebook page and let slip the dogs of war. If we can't catch them, police said, let them catch each other. All they have to do is tell us and we'll take it from there.
On the police's page, which currently has some 17,000 fans, anyone can post info, videos and photos of other drivers breaking the law. So far, by using this type of law enforcement 2.0, police have handed out 665 tickets.
Yet, according to New Delhi's joint commissioner of traffic, Satyendra Garg, this was not the initial destination of the Facebook page.
“We wanted a forum where people could express their views and suggest changes,” Garg told The New York Times. “Traffic police can’t be present everywhere, but rules are always being broken. If people want to report it, we welcome it. A violation is a violation.”
Of course, such a way to enforce the law may leave room for abuse, but that does not concern the police. Those who feel they have been abused can always contest the tickets.
For now, the New Delhi police is probably looking into ways to send the tickets via email, but not before notifying the drivers via a phone tweet. The police will also accept Linden dollars when you pay.
