Kids can react strangely when they don’t feel like sharing their toys and might even break those toys just to prevent another child from playing with them. This is very much like that, only with a grown man and a bike he was riding without a helmet or registration, and while drunk.
It happened in Delhi, India, this week, when police pulled over a man on a bike because he wasn’t wearing a helmet. That wasn’t his only offense, either: he didn’t have proper documentation for the bike and he was drunk.
“The traffic police staff told us that they had hailed one motorcycle rider who was driving without helmet. He was identified as Rakesh, a resident of Sarvodaya Enclave, who works at a restaurant in Hauz Khas. He was also drunk,” additional deputy commissioner of police Parvinder Singh tells the Hindustan Times. “He could not produce a valid registration document of the bike. Since he was also drunk and was not wearing a helmet, the policemen issued a challan (fine) accordingly.”
The fine totaled Rs 16,000 ($224) and it got Rakesh so mad that he started throwing a tantrum right away. It culminated when he saw the officers getting ready to impound the bike, which is when he lunged at it and made sure that, if he wasn’t able to ride it, no one else would touch it.
“Initially, he resisted and then kicked his motorcycle. As the vehicle fell on the road, he pulled its fuel pipe, spilling the petrol. Before the policemen could control him, he took out a matchbox and set the bike on fire,” Singh explains.
Rakesh was eventually cuffed and taken to the police headquarters, where a case was registered against him. The report doesn’t say anything of the damage to the bike or if the angry rider will be facing additional charges for turning it into a bonfire in the middle of a crowded street.
