India Presents World’s First Armored Golf Cart

The word that the US Army will no longer buy Humvee trucks must have gone out fast, as a lot of companies are showing interest in getting contracts with the American Government. Maybe that’s why the Indian company Metaltech Motor Bodies Pvt Ltd has presented the A-TAC armored vehicle at a Weapons Expo in New Delhi.

Jokes aside, the little bulletproof vehicle is meant to be used against terrorist attack in narrow places like airports, hotels or stadiums. A-TAC can even go on hallways or in elevators in attempts to rescue hostages.

The company which builds this vehicle was inspired by the Islamic terrorist attacks on Bombay from 2008. Back then, the terrorists fought the Indian army from two luxury hotels for three days. In the confrontation 166 people were killed and the People at Metaltech say that things might have gone another way is the army had such a vehicle.

"It's a product of our sense of helplessness over the casualties we took in the attacks," said managing director J.B. Sehrawat. "We put our heads and hearts together and came up with the ATAC," he said.

The vehicle is battery-powered and can carry two fully-armed officers. It costs 2 million rupee (45,000 dollars) and weights about half a tone. It has two firing posts, it can withstand grenade blasts and last for six hours on a single charge with a top speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

"It is a great concept as compact combat units are the need of the day," said K.J. Rao, a spokesman of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation.
