Most of them are 3D and you take seat behind the wheel, while a virtual instructor tells you where to go and when you fail. However, in Sierra Leone, things are a bit different...
Sierra Leone is not all about skinny kids with AK 47s trying to rescue their parents who slave in diamond mines. They have a vast culture, customs and interesting food dishes. You might have a bit of a problem with the way their undisciplined and uneducated drivers behave on roads and cause thousands of accidents each year.
To stop this, the authorities in Sierra Leone found a new ingenious way to teach youngsters road rules before getting their driver’s license - a board game.
Called ”The Driver’s Way”, the board game is similar to Monopoly, the players having to move pieces modeled like classic cars around a colorful board after rolling a dice to advance.
Of course, to advance, the players must know real life traffic rules. Each mistake in the game is ‘rewarded’ with a fine, so they need to be careful even if the dice says you can proceed (the dice makes for some sort of street light). Reaching the end with as much money possible means you know enough to drive safely in real world.
The game costs SSL 60,000 (around $14) and everyone aspiring for a driver’s license in Sierra Leone is kinda obliged to buy and play it.
