IKEA to Test HydroGen4

After back in 2005 home products retailer and manufacturer IKEA took Opel's HydroGen3 for a test, the next generation of that vehicle, the HydroGen4, has landed in IKEA's parking lot, to be tested in partnership with ENERTRAG.

The announcement was made one day before the fuel-cell rally, which starts today, May 12, and takes hydrogen vehicles on a trip from Berlin to Hamburg.

"We were impressed by IKEA’s ideas for a variety of uses for the HydroGen4 from the very beginning. This gives us a wide spectrum of new utility profiles for market testing, and valuable insights for the further development of our fuel cell vehicles,” Lars Peter Thiesen, manager of European launch strategy for hydrogen and fuel cells at Opel said in a statement.

HydroGen4 is powered by a fuel cell stack with 440 single cells which combine hydrogen and oxygen from the air to produce electricity. The only bi-product is water vapor, while the instant torque characteristics of the HydroGen4 electric motor allows the vehicle to fastly pick-up from low speed.

“The challenge up to 2020 is to connect the energy sector with mobility intelligently and sustainably. For this reason we have developed a hybrid power plant. With Opel, we have found a partner that makes it possible in the short-term to drive with our own sustainably produced fuel – and without any emissions,” Werner Diwald, CEO of ENERTRAG added.

So far, the vehicle has been tested by other big names in the world economy, all owners of very large vehicle fleets: Allianz, Coca-Cola, Hilton, Linde, Schindler, Total and Veolia
