IIHS Names Steven George Chairman of the Board

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), one of the most important car safety organizations on the US, announced today the appointment of Steven George, currently executive vice president for AAA of Northern California, Nevada, and Utah, to the position of chairman of the board.

As it was the case with his predecessor, Jonathan Bennett, George will be at the top of the IIHS leadership for a year. He will be accompanied on his journey through the treacherous worlds of crash tests and Top Safety Picks by Chairman-elect Douglas Joyce (president, Alfa Alliance Insurance Corporation) and Vice Chairman Bill Martin (senior vice president, Integrated Marketing, Farmers Insurance Group of Companies).

"Reducing crash injuries, deaths, and property damage on our nation's roads is a top priority with insurers," George said when his appointment was made public.

"The Institute's crash tests, research, and communications programs have had a significant impact on highway safety, and I look forward to joining my colleagues and fellow Board members this year to advance this important work."

Under the new leadership, the IIHS plans to continue testing and rating vehicles as it has done over the past years. No change in methodology is in sight, but the results of past tests are conclusive enough to begin compiling them.

The IIHS has already done so with the results of its side impact crash tests, with the results showing (as if there was any more need to) that vehicles rated high are doing a better job at protecting their occupants that the ones who score poorly (if anything, this is a sign that the IIHS rating system works).
