If You Want a Volvo, You Should Have Bought a Volkswagen Diesel

The Swedish brand is making a spectacular comeback and its lineup, as limited as it is, is looking sexier with every new model that gets launched. It's also looking more and more similar, but that means Volvo is merely falling in line with the rest of the manufacturers.
However, beautiful and well engineered as its cars are (with the latter still too early to evaluate), Volvo is still a newcomer in the premium segment with the top sellers looking down on it from a considerable height. We doubt the Chinese-owned Swedes are thinking about taking the fight to the top three spots yet, but there's no point playing if you don't want to win, so they are definitely looking to make the most of it.

The success of a brand isn't measured by the design of its cars or the level of technology they offer, but the number of units it manages to sell. And it looks like the Volkswagen settlement deal with U.S owners has turned into a big sales opportunity for the rest of the carmakers, with Volvo joining in on the feast.

The soon-to-be-ex-owners of Volkswagen TDI cars are going to be courted by a lot of other brands, and that's because they are ideal clients: they are certainly in the market for a new car since their previous one turned out to be a cancer dispenser on wheels and had to be returned.

To lure them toward Volvo products, the US branch of the company is offering five years of complimentary "Safe & Secure Coverage" - that's five years or 50,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance, free roadside assistance, and free-of-charge replacement of brake components (pads, mostly) and wiper blades. That may not sound like much, but it's actually worth around $1,700. It's a good time to be a Volkswagen 2.0 TDI owner.

Still not exactly the kind of sum to convince a premium-segment client to buy your cars, but it could be enough to get them to at least try it out. And if Volvo succeeds in doing that, then half the problem is solved because its products really are competitive. The offer is available until January 2.
