It was only by sheer, stupid luck that this man didn’t get gored to death, after stepping out of his car to taunt a bison in Yellowstone National Park.
The incident happened the other day in Hayden Valley on a busy road, and was captured on camera and posted to social media by Lindsey Jones. She was traveling in one of the cars on the road and happened to be very close to the man when he started his little macho stunt.
It could have cost him his life, but he’s lucky enough to be alive and unharmed. You can see the video at the bottom of the page.
Cars are lined up in both directions, rolling as slow speed, as the bison wanders among them and on the side of the road. At one point, a guy comes up in the middle of the road, grunting and gesturing towards the wild animal, to get its attention.
He gets it, alright. The bison charges at him twice and misses, and then quickly loses interest. One fellow motorist can be heard yelling “Get out of there!” to the idiot prankster, but others are simply fascinated by the show he’s putting on.
While seeing this kind of stupid stunt live might be somewhat entertaining, it doesn’t make it less stupid or dangerous. As the park’s guidelines clearly state, you’re to avoid coming too close to wild animals, or risk serious harm or even death.
“Animals in Yellowstone are wild and unpredictable, no matter how calm they appear to be,” the guidelines clearly state. “Give animals space when they're near trails, boardwalks, parking lots, or in developed areas. If you can't maintain these distances, turn around and find an alternate route.”
Translation: the last thing you should do is get out of your car to taunt or provoke them.
Two people have been injured by bison at the park this year alone. One man was gored after he got too close, and a woman was butted in the thigh when she crossed paths with one bison she hadn’t even seen.
