Over the past handful of years, automotive-themed timepieces have been slowly but steadily gaining popularity. Other than watchmakers, one too automakers have jumped into the fray as well, the latest outfit being Los Angeles-based shop ICON.
Forget the restomod Toyota FJ44 and Ford Bronco, for this story is about one of the most beautiful watches we’ve seen in recent memory. Née ICON Duesey, the timepiece is limited to 50 examples, each costing $11,500.
One of the reasons the Duesey is so expensive is that it’s manufactured in Switzerland with the most high-quality materials and mechanisms one can expect from $11,500. Not based on any other watch currently in existence, the timepiece is designed and modeled entirely by ICON's Jonathan Ward.
The clean, minimalist design draws inspiration from the original Duesenberg tachometer, the one fitted to the straight-8 Model A. The resemblance is uncanny, and the finish is – as expected – superlative. “Every aesthetic element of this design, from bezel to buckle, is unique to The Duesey, crafted specifically for this one watch,” says the company, and boy it surely shows!
Measuring 42 millimeters, the bezel prides itself on polished titanium and an NBR O-ring for water resistance. The crystal, meanwhile, is double domed sapphire with anti-reflective coating on each side. As for the case body and 5-millimeter crown embellished with the ICON lizard, those are titanium as well.
Moving on to the dial, ICON decided on onyx stone and polished brass for maximum old-school elegance. Under the skin, the movement is of the Dubois-Depreaz Automatic 14400 variety and consists of a custom oscillating tungsten alloy weight that’s augmented by a mix of rhodium and gold plating.
From a practical standpoint, the wearer should be comfortable with the Duesey thanks to the 7-hole alligator leather strap with black calf leather lining. On that note, each timepiece is covered by a 24-month warranty.
