We here at autoevolution think that car design peaked in the 1960s, an era when cars were curvy and designers weren’t constrained and held back, as they are today. One of the most beautiful cars the world has ever seen is the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, a car custom-built between 1960 and 1963 to give Ferrari a run for their money.
Now, American custom car maker, Icon 4x4, will take on a huge task: to make a convertible version of the original DB4 Zagato which only came as a coupe, expected to be called ‘Reformer’ - a name almost as cool as ‘Interceptor’. Seeing the work they’ve done on the Ford Bronco, turning it from a lackluster and average 4x4 from the 1970s into a modern car which looks stunning and can do proper off-roading, with 412 bucking broncos at its disposal from a 5.0-liter V8, we would be lying if we said we weren’t (so much more than) intrigued.
To further boost the future DB4 GT Zagato’s credentials, Icon 4x4 will enlist the help of the Ercole Spada, the original designer of the 1960s classic, currently aged 75. With plans slot Aston Martins current 6.0-liter V12 under the bonnet, a modern chassis with modern brakes, steering and suspension, this is shaping up to be something excellent!
Having seen the Eagle Speedster, we’ve seen what a project like this can bring, with the Eagle being even prettier than the original E-Type, we want this to materialize. Even though we know we’ll never afford it, at least we’ll have something true and proper to pin up on our wall (we may be old fashioned, but we'd still do it).
