Staying true to the definition of restomodding, the Reformer series from Icon 4x4 is supremely capable and tasteful at the same time. For this particular build, the Los Angeles-based shop chose a 1970 pickup truck as the starting point.
Before it was replaced by the F-150, the Blue Oval’s half-tonner used to be called F-100. The fifth-gen here is factory-rated at 5,500 pounds for gross vehicle weight, and at the time, you couldn’t get a more powerful engine than the FE V8 with 6.4 liters of displacement. The restomod, however, packs a Coyote V8.
The Five-Oh we all know and love from the Mustang and F-150 produces 426 horsepower (420 PS) in this application and breathes out through a sports exhaust system from Borla. The four-wheel-drive system is mated to an AOD automatic transmission and a twin-stick transfer case from Advance Adapters.
The axles are both Dana units bolted onto a new frame that sweetens the deal with Fox Racing shock absorbers and Eibach springs. As far as the suspension is concerned, Icon 4x4 borrowed some bits and bobs from its restomod Bronco. To the point, this F-100 now features a four-link rear and front radius arms.
But that’s not all, oh no! Modern hardware also includes 18-inch forged aluminum wheels that replicate the period-correct design of humble steelies. Behind them, you’ll find six- and four-piston calipers from none other than Brembo.
The two-tone exterior with an illuminated bed is complemented by a charming cabin with fabric-and-leather upholstery for the seats instead of vinyl. To the untrained eye, the instrument cluster may look like a refurbished unit but it’s actually from Dakota Digital. This trend carries over to the unassuming stereo that can take calls or play your favorite song thanks to Bluetooth connectivity.
What is the purpose of the Reformer series, though? According to Icon 4x4, “classic styling and modern performance” are mixed “to create a daily driver” that can be described as “epic and distinct.” The Dodge Power Wagon HEMI V8 restomod we’ve covered a few years ago is also a Reformer.
