iBiker Android/iPhone App to Reduce Crashes

UK’s Department for Transport has recently funded the development of a new mobile phone application that is aimed at reducing the number of motorcyclists killed and seriously injured on nationwide roads. Dubbed iBiker, the app features former double World Superbike Champion James Toseland, and is available on the iPhone and Android mobile phones.

Bikers make up a large proportion of road death on the roads. 27% of all people killed or seriously injured on Cheshire's roads in 2010 were on motorbikes yet they make up only 2% of traffic. Of the 39 people who died on our roads last year 14 were motorcyclists.

“Uniquely we have filmed more than 90 different biker routes in the country that will be well known, such as the Cat & Fiddle and Snake Pass, and have asked experienced police riders to highlight the common dangers on these roads to bikers in the videos,”
said Gurminder Marwaha of Redefine Convention.

"We hope these videos will help bikers familiarize themselves with the routes and their potential hazards and dangers before they go on their rides,” he added.

The app costs £2.39 on iTunes and £2.59 on Android Market and lets you:
• Plan, plot, and save rides/routes.
• Highlight points of interests, including pubs, cafes, cash points, hotels, shops, petrol stations and meeting points.
• Rate routes.
• Share information about routes via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and other social networking sites.
• Watch video run-throughs of popular or crash-happy UK routes, such as the Cat and Fiddle, highlighting danger areas.
• Enables bikers to sign up to BikeSafe post-test training
• Watch “myth busting” maintenance videos starring James Toseland.
