Ian Callum Wants Another Jaguar SUV, Defends F-Pace Name

Jaguar may be launching its first crossover soon, but the company is still steeped in traditional values. As such, their famous design director, who spent all of his career penning stunning sportscars, was somewhat reluctant to work on an offroader, even though it was being suggested to him for quite a few years. But once he got going, the ideas started to flow and he says everybody should be happy with the outcome.
In an interview with British magazine Auto Express, Callum revealed that after the F-Pace, other crossover SUVs might follow. "It has been a good project and in fact we might do another one. XJ could be F-Grace!”, the official stated.

This is an obvious reference to the classic Jaguar motto from the 60s, "Grace, Space and Pace", which served as the basis for the controversial new name they announced this week. Many people expected the name XQ to be used, and Callum admits this was among those seriously considered.

However, they decided against it because the letter Q would be associated with Audi and Aston Martin uses it for their tailor-made division.

Another name seriously considered was "X-Type", yes, the same one as their Ford-based sedan of old. It would have been an obvious choice, but many officials weren't "brave enough" to go for it, Callum says.

The list was eventually narrowed down to three names and the controversial F-Pace was used "because I think it's got a bit of texture and character to it and I think after time people will get used to it".

Texture? You really do get the sense that Jaguar doesn't do things the German way.

There aren't any trial programs, marketing research or studies. It's just a bunch of folks who really love cars sitting at a table and throwing ideas around. But hey, that's how the F-Type was made, so maybe we should give them a shot.

Our say: They could have named it the X-Type with no problems at all. The old XJ and the modern sedan look nothing aline and nobody bats an eyelid. But if Jaguar simply wanted to latch onto the sportscar in order to connect to its dynamism, they could have just given it a sporty name rather then making it look like another f type derivative. Look at Porsche, they have the right animalistic ideas – Macan (tiger), Cayman (crocodile). But what do you guys thing of the F-Pace name? Let us know by commenting.
