Hyundai is developing the second generation of its ix35 Fuel Cell Vehicle, and the new model will be launched in mid-2017.
The replacement of the current ix35 Fuel Cell will be targeted to the general public and is expected to have a lower price. Furthermore, the range and performance of the ix35 FCV’s replacement are set to be increased, and the weight of the car will be reduced.
The new model will be the second-generation fuel cell vehicle from the South Korean brand available for sale. However, Hyundai already has five generations of FCVs behind, as it has developed numerous prototypes over the years.
As the Brits from Autocar note, Hyundai has a big offensive planned in the world of hydrogen cars, and its upcoming models will deliver a range of around 500 miles (800 km) and have a top speed of around 110 MPH (176 km/h).
While Hyundai does have hybrids and electric models in its range, the South Korean carmaker believes that hydrogen cars will be the future.
The company will not invest in the direct development of the network of fuel stations for hydrogen cars, and it does admit the fact that the popularity of these vehicles is limited by a small network of refueling stations.
Hyundai preferred to invest in events to raise public awareness of hydrogen fuel cell cars, which would eventually lead to more customers and the consequent expansion of refuel stations for these vehicles.
Hyundai is not the only carmaker to have FCVs in its portfolio, as Toyota launched the Mirai last year, and Honda has released a new generation of the Clarity. As in the case of electric cars, the expansion of the network of refueling stations is crucial to the success of these vehicles.
Unlike electrics, hydrogen-fueled cars are recharged in a matter of minutes, but require a high-pressure nozzle for refuel, so specialized fuel stations are needed.
