Hyundai to Start Brazilian Plant Construction in 2010

South Korean carmaker Hyundai will start the construction of a new production facility in Brazil in 2010, a company official said, but specific details on when exactly this is going to happen are yet to be decided. Vice Chairman Chung Eui Sun said at the Frankfurt Auto Show that the company has decided to revive initial plans to build a plant in the country after shelving them earlier this year due to the economic recession.

It all started approximately one year ago when Hyundai proudly announced that it wants to build a new plant in Brazil that could take advantage of Latin America's growing economy and help the carmaker increase its market share in the region. Hyundai said it would invest around $600 million in the plant which was initially supposed to produce small cars.

According to the initial plans, the facility was designed to roll off around 100,000 cars per year starting from the first half of 2011.

Hyundai will also build a third plant in China because the growing market in the country returned enthusiastic figures for the South Korean manufacturer which is currently selling several models in China.

Total Chinese output of the South-Korean manufacturer is expected to increase, after production starts, by some 300,000 units. The deadline for the finalization of the construction is 2012, and will bring the total number of Hyundai vehicles produced from the 550,000 forecasted for 2009 to some 900,000. However, Hyundai hasn't picked a spot to build the new Chinese plant so more details are to come in the near future.
