Hyundai to Sell 300,000 Tucson/ix35 Each Year

Korean manufacturer Hyundai has set an ambitious goal for its newcomer, the Tucson/ix35. Recently presented prior to the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Tucson/ix35 will become a centerpiece in the Hyundai line-up.

The company has set a 300,000 vehicles/year goal, to be reached starting 2010. It is the year when the SUV will go on sale both in the US and Europe. 260,000 are expected to be sold in overseas markets, while in the remaining months of 2009, Hyundai has a sales target of 16,000 units.

The American spec Hyundai Tucson/ix35 will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December, but details are known. Still wearing the Tucson nameplate, the SUV will not use the V6 engine, but four-cylinder options. There will be two engines, a 2.0l and a 2.4l ones. According to
Hyundai spokesman Oles Gadacz, the 2.4l engine, when paired with the manufacturer's new six-speed automatic transmission, will surpass both the performance and fuel consumption ratings of the V6.

The Korean version, released yesterday, is powered by a 2.0l engine, available in both diesel (R) and gasoline (Theta II) versions. The diesel has an output of 184 hp, while the gasoline one develops 166 hp.

Even if the price of the US spec Tucson is not yet known, in Korea it is available in between 21 million won ($16,840) for the diesel 2WD and 27 million won ($21,650) for the top of the line version. The gasoline version will be priced less expensive, with prices ranging from 19 million won ($15,240) to 24 million won ($19,250).
